Adolescent Substance Abuse Program

Newport News Behavioral Health Center provides intensive substance abuse treatment for males and females, ages 11 to 18. This program encourages residents to reach and maintain a healthy lifestyle without the use of mood-altering substances. Our treatment modalities are based on evidence-based practices. Program oversight provided by certified substance abuse counselors.

Substance Abuse services are provided by licensed or license-eligible therapists that are certified substance abuse counselors in Virginia. The program is overseen by the Medical Director, a psychiatrist who is board-certified in addiction medicine.

  • Initial SASSI-A2 or SASSI-3 screening for all new admissions
  • Weekly substance abuse, education and prevention groups
  • Intensive substance abuse group therapies
  • Group, individual and family therapies
  • Family support seeking safety groups
  • Assessment and diagnostic services
  • Expressive therapies
  • GED preparation
  • Transitional planning for referrals to community resources upon discharge
  • Treatment planning tailored to residents’ specific needs
  • Gender-specific programming
  • 24-hour nursing care
  • Art, music, pet and recreation therapies
  • Life skills training
  • Refusal skills training
  • Licensed and accredited education services

The Admissions Department at Newport News Behavioral Health Center is staffed by caring, competent professionals who will provide resident placement assistance. The office is staffed Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Learn more about our admissions criteria.

Newport News Behavioral Health Center provides behavioral health treatment services to children and adolescents in a therapeutic environment. If your child is struggling with behavioral or emotional issues, please call us at 757-888-0400 or use our online form. 

Licensed professionals are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide confidential, no-cost assessments. In case of a medical emergency, please dial 911 or seek the nearest emergency room right away.
