Newport News Behavioral Health Center’s residential treatment program serves adolescents who suffer from severe symptoms of a psychiatric disorder. Residents, age 11 to 18, are taught coping skills they can utilize upon their return to their home and community. The program takes place in a secure environment designed to allow residents to relax and wholly focus on addressing their issues.
The treatment team uses evidence-based practices in a therapeutic environment and meets residents on their level. With the team’s support, residents are able to explore their thoughts and feelings and how that impacts their behavior. Through this reflection, they may learn to develop positive attitudes and behaviors.
Our personal development system serves as a vehicle for residents and staff to assess behavioral progress and maintain a steady recovery. The system stands to address resident accomplishments and setbacks and determine treatment goals. It also helps our staff determine if a resident is eligible to participate in social activities, outings and special events.
Certified teachers are on staff to help residents stay on track with their schoolwork during their stay with us. The residential treatment program attempts to recognize and build on residents’ academic strengths. We strive to help our residents overcome academic weaknesses so they can become better students.
The Newport News Behavioral Health Center admissions department is staffed by qualified professionals who will provide assistance in placing a resident. The office is staffed Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The admissions department staff conducts confidential, no-cost assessments to decide upon the most appropriate level of care for each resident. Residents may transition to a less intensive program after leaving residential care.
